The acidity of the vinegar helps remove black mold spores, while the baking soda scrubs away and absorbs excess moisture. However, this method is not recommended for walls with a flat paint sheen because the vinegar and scrub brush might leave imperfections that require touch-up painting. Alternatively, try adding a teaspoon of tea tree oil to the vinegar solution to further eliminate mold and prevent it from returning.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a strong, inexpensive cleaning agent that kills some types of mold. It also doesn’t create harmful decomposition byproducts, like most other cleaners. However, it’s not suitable for use on certain textile dyes and is only stable under acidic conditions.

To use hydrogen peroxide for cleaning and killing mold, mix undiluted 3 percent solution with water in a spray bottle. Saturate the moldy area and let it sit for 10 minutes to kill the mold spores. Then, scrub the area to remove any remaining stains. Rinse the surface with clean water and dry it with a cloth or towel.

While bleach and hydrogen peroxide work well on non-porous surfaces, they aren’t effective on porous materials like drywall or wood. To prevent mold from returning, use a dehumidifier to reduce humidity levels, fix leaks, and regularly inspect and clean the areas of your home where moisture is likely to accumulate.

Tea Tree Oil
