If you spot black mold in your home, you need to find a solution to kill it. Luckily, there are several safe and natural options.

Always use a biocide as it will kill the mold spores and prevent them from growing again. You will also need to fix any leaks and run a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter to help clear the spores from the air in your home.

Bleach

Bleach is a common solution for removing mold, particularly on porous surfaces such as wood and drywall. However, it can be harmful to the health of those exposed and can also leave toxic fumes behind. If you’re looking for a safer option, there are a variety of nontoxic cleaners that are safe to use and are effective at tackling black mould spores.

For example, white distilled vinegar is a cheap and effective way to remove mold from porous materials. Simply mix it with water and apply to the moldy surface. After letting it sit for an hour or so, you can wipe away the solution and allow the area to dry. If the mold is particularly stubborn, try scrubbing the affected area with a toothbrush and reapplying the cleaning solution. However, this is only a short-term fix and won’t eliminate the problem completely. It merely masks the fungi by taking their colour. According to a mycologist who studies fungi for a living, bleach is one of the worst ways to remove mold from your home.

Hydrogen Peroxide

In colder weather, it can be difficult to keep your windows open in order to ventilate your home – and this could lead to black mould developing. If you do not have bleach at hand, using hydrogen peroxide as a natural fungicide can be a great way to clean your home and kill off the black mold spores.

Hydrogen peroxide contains an oxidizing agent that has disinfectant, antiviral and antibacterial properties. It is a safer option than bleach, as it does not emit any harmful fumes. To use, pour 3 percent solution into a spray bottle and apply to the affected area. Allow to sit for about 15 minutes, then scrub away. Rinse thoroughly and dry the surface.

Tea tree oil is another effective natural fungicide that can be used as a substitute for vinegar. One study found that it was more effective than alcohol, vinegar or two commercial cleaners at inhibiting fungi growth. To use, mix a teaspoon of tea tree oil with a cup of water and spray on to the mouldy areas.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is an affordable natural cleaner that works well for mildew and mold. According to The Spruce, it’s as effective (though a little slower-working) as bleach, but without the harmful fumes and residue. Mix equal parts lemon juice and water in a spray bottle for a handy mold killer. You can also heat pure or diluted lemon juice to increase its effectiveness.

Grapefruit seed extract is a useful household item for various healthcare remedies and cleaning solutions, including battling black mould. It contains polyphenols, such as limonoids and naringenin, which kill mold and mildew. Add 20 drops to a cup of water and squirt over the moldy area.

Tea tree oil is another popular wellness product that’s effective in fighting black mould. It’s a powerful insect repellant, deodorizer and antiseptic that penetrates and destroys the mold spores. Use a damp towel to wipe it away, or put a teaspoon of the essential oil into a spray bottle and apply it to affected areas.

Baking Soda

Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a common product that fills many roles in the home. It helps cook food, neutralizes odors and cleans surfaces. It’s safe for children and pets, and can help kill mold spores.

It also works well as a black mould remover. Mix together equal parts white vinegar and baking soda and apply it to the affected area. The acid in the vinegar attacks the structure of the mold, and the baking soda absorbs and removes it from the surface.

Baking soda does not leave behind a strong odor and is non-toxic, making it a safer option than bleach. It’s also a good choice for surfaces that cannot be soaked. Spray the solution onto the affected surface, let it sit and scrub thoroughly with a brush or scrubbing pad. Rinse and dry the area, and it should discourage future growth. You should still take the same safety precautions as with other cleaning products, and wear gloves and a mask when using this product.
